I’m Inside a Caribou

Just wanted to wish you a Happy 4th and let you know where I am this week…

I’m in Minnesota for the week and my mother-in-law actually doesn’t have internet access if you can believe that.

*PLUS* the local Starbucks was one of the 600+ that got shut down - so, I’m actually
writing to you from inside a Caribou…

Caribou Coffee that is. :) You may not be familiar with Caribou, but it’s actually either
the 2nd or 3rd largest coffee franchise in the world. And more importantly, there’s
one near where I’m staying up in Blaine, MN.

*AND* they have free WiFi … yay!

I’m here for a week - today, I’m running up to some very dear friends with lots of grand
kids to celebrate the 4th up in Oak Grove.

I love me some up-close fireworks. Should be fun. If you don’t follow me on Twitter, you may not know that I’ve lost over 35 pounds and I have 20 more to go till I hit my goal of 180 pounds… very excited about
that and will take some new pictures once I hit that goal.

Oh, and I know you don’t give a crap, but I thought it was funny … I get a “free day” from my diet every week and this one is gonna fall on today… the 4th of July .. Independence Day … FREE DAY.

Get it?

Anywhoo - peace out, happy 4th, God bless if ya believe in him, and Good Energy to ya if you don’t (or if you do, whatever).

Oh, one final thing…

Amidst all this economic turmoil, I’d like for you to think for a second just how lucky you are for being born in a FREE nation (whether that’s USA, England, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Ireland, Wales, Germany, anywhere else in the E.U., — or wherever you may be from.)

Imagine being one of the 2/3rds of the country that just got screwed over in Iran right now…

… or being a woman in a country that still gives you no rights…

… or believing in a religion or race that is being extinguished by an attacking government…

Just imagine that for a few seconds and then be *so* thankful that you were born with the advantages that
you were born with.

I know I am.

Happy Free Day,

Harris

Improve or Die.

Recently, my good friend and boy genius, Sam Heyer, recommended that I read a book by Alan Deutschman called “Change or Die” because I’ll be releasing a community around my upcoming “Fail Your Way” brand. I’m wanting to create a totally new experience for people trying to make money on the web and he felt it would be good mental positioning for me to read a book about how people really change (or really IMPROVE) their lives.

First, I definitely recommend that EVERYONE reads this book. Don’t just order it. Read it because It will have an immediate and profound affect on your thinking. Second, I’d like to share with you my thoughts about what “Change or Die” has taught me so far in the hopes that it will inspire you to at least read the book and perhaps inspire you to make big improvements that you’re wanting to make in your own life.

Right off the bat, you should know that the title of the book is purposefully misleading. As it turns out, our normal methods of trying to change each other don’t work. These normal methods are “Fear, Facts, and Force”.

It’s a widely known fact that 90% of all open-heart operation patients return to their same lifestyle within 3 years. While 67% of ex-convicts return to jail within in the same period of time as well…

“Change your eating drastically and exercise or YOU WILL DIE”

“Don’t break the law of you will go to Jail!”

These are two very good (or bad) examples of how Force, Facts, and Fear simply DON’T WORK. Here’s another one for ya:

“Make money online this month or you won’t be able to pay your bills.”

But that’s a problem for a different day…

Change or Die gives some incredible case studies that have turned these horrible results around (as well as other “Change or Die” scenarios, too.) Without me getting into any details on the case studies, the reason they worked are because they all contain the three components of changing human behavior that actually DO work: Relate, Repeat, Reframe.

First, if a person is to change, they must relate to a person or community. They must form a relationship that makes them feel good (or “the right relationship”). Secondly, they must repeat the new behaviors so they learn them. And then finally, one must REFRAME their belief systems. (For instance, most ex-cons think there’s no other way than a life of crime and poverty since it’s all they’ve ever known.)

So, as I’m reading the book and wanting to apply it to my new FailYourWay.com community… I can’t help but turn the mirror onto myself. I’m currently going through a weight-loss regimen. I’ve lost 36 pounds so far and have another 20 until my first goal. And, well, the book told me that 97% of the people who lose weight will gain it back within 5 years. Yes!

NINETY SEVEN EFFING PERCENT!

Been there. Done that. Have the postcards & stretch marks to prove it.

Secondly, I know many of you follow me because of my marketing and business teachings. But the truth of the matter is - I often don’t feel like I even *have* a business. Sure, I’ve got a few guys working for me on the payroll. But the ugly truth is, I make a lot of money - but I really just go from one product launch to the next and I’m freaking fed up with it. It’s been a roller coaster ride that I’ve been on for longer than I can remember.

So, whether it’s the roller coaster ride of my business or my weight-loss … what can I do to truly change for good. How can I, Harris Fellman, improve my life forever? The answer is:

Relate. Repeat. Reframe.

I’m already well on my way with regard to the weight loss. I have a great health coach that’s helping me get my eating habits in line. Her name is Lynette Patterson - you can find her on Twitter @LynettePatter. My next step is to locate a personal trainer or some group or groups that I *relate* to in order to get me exercising regularly.

(Yes, I’ve lost 36 pounds without really exercising all that much yet.)

For my business, I’m now on the hunt for a mentor or community to help ME get to the next level. I realize, actually, that in developing my own community designed to help people make money online, I’ll derive some benefit from that. But I’m looking for something to help me truly get to the next level with my business.

I’m looking seriously into a group called CEOSpace right now and there’s a couple others, too. I need to get my brain to flip the switch and think more like a business OWNER instead of someone who’s just self-employed. Honestly, I was introduced to CEOSpace as their former name 3 years ago (IBI Global), and after reading Change or Die I was thinking about it - and then OMG, someone from the company called me yesterday. One shouldn’t just brush things like this under the carpet when they happen, should they?

My good friend (and sometimes mentor), Tellman Knudson, has been telling me this for years. “Get a mentor and do exactly what he tells you.” I guess I’ve just never happened upon anyone (or group) that relates directly to me and what I want out of a business.

But just like weight-loss, it’s just a singular decision now. Once the decision is made, I’ll stop at nothing to achieve my goals. Honestly, the weight-loss has been incredibly easy - so easy that it’s STUPID to not just lose the weight.

Ha. As I write this, I realize that I’m actually afraid that the business changes are going to be very difficult to go through. But perhaps, just like the weight-loss, it will all be way easier than I think. Why not, right? Hmm, yes, I think I’ll go with that new belief. Improving my business and becoming more of a true business owner is going to be a lot easier than I ever imagined. Sweet!

Alright, that’s all I’ve got for now. Probably my longest blog post ever. When I told the twitterverse about reading a book about ‘change’, @CalebJennings wrote me back and recommended that I read “Virus of the Mind”. I quickly downloaded the Amazon app for my iPhone, ordered it, and a couple days later it arrived.

I’ll let you know what I think of that book soon as well.

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on any big lifestyle changes you’ve had in your life and how you think “Relate, Repeat, Reframe” has played a role. I’d also like to know how many years ago that lifestyle change began. Just scroll back up and click on the “comments” link and talk at me.

To Your Ongoing Improvement,
Harris Fellman

Twits Tweeple or Twinjas

**NEW** -> BEST SUGGESTION IN TWITTER WINS CHOICE OF

—— —— —— —– —– ———- ——–

What’s up, my Twinjas?

I tend to use the word “Twinjas” quite a bit to talk to my followers. People usually comment on it just above everytime I use it. @mike_wesely even credited me with coining the word. Now, I’m pretty sure I did *not* coin the word “Twinjas” (but I’ll take the credit if noone else will, LOL - it reminds me of the fact that a small town in Anoka in Minnesota calls themselves the “Halloween Capital of the World” - hey if nobody else claims the crown, wear it proudly, right?

Anyway, I digress….

Today I just wanted to know what other names you call your group of Twitter Followers.

I’ve seen Twits, Tweeple, and Tweeps pretty regularly.

I saw a little uproar when someone shouted out to “my twiggas”.

And, I know I use “My Twinjas” quite a bit as it seems like a strong, positive, exciting name to call ‘em.

Also, I *WANTED* to yell out “What’s up, Twitches!!” (Tw+Bitches=Twitches) But it really doesn’t work since ‘twitches’ sounds like someone has a nervous disorder.

Anyway, I’m curious - perhaps consider this your quick ‘waste of time’ conversation for the day. But tell me please - what are some other cool names you do or you could call your group of Twitter Followers.  (Yuck - Twollowers could be another, but kinda lame, right?)

UPDATE: My Effing COMMENT FUNCTION is broken - so let’s just use Twitter. Be sure to have “@harrisfellman” and #twinjas in the post - as in “Hey @harrisfellman, I suggest _____ because ______ #twinjas”. Give me all your suggestions on twitter - I’ll award a winner from there (grrr - technology!)

@harrisfellman

P.S. Googling and Searching Twitter for “Twinjas” - I’m positive I wasn’t the first person to use it. <G>

P.P.S. I’m curious if anyone has an opinion on “My Twiggas”, too. Feel free to tweet that too, if U do.

Twitter No Good For Your Business?

I was recently on a friend of mine’s fledgling advice-centric social network, AdviceEnomics.com, and I happened up this post looking for advice re: Twitter.

“I am on Twitter now but they say 60% of the people
drop off during the first month. I am not feeling so hot
about connecting with others. Maybe I am not using it
properly to promote my business. Can someone give
their advice regarding this?”

So, I thought I’d share with you my advice:

Gosh, where do I start?

I’ll try to keep this advice focused directly on the question and not reply to the other people that gave advice (or opinions).

I’ve recently been doing a lot of interviews with internet marketers. I asked them “give me a free traffic secret”, more than half of them have said “Twitter”. So, I drilled down a bit.

One of the things I kept hearing from IMers is “my twitter list is MORE RESPONSIVE than my email list”. It took 4 or 5 months and hearing that many times that it finally hit me like a house falling on me over the rainbow…

Twitter Followers = List Building

And here’s something AMAZING about Twitter…

YOU CAN SEE WHO’S FOLLOWING WHO

So, here’s a strategy for you.

Step 1) Go into settings and fill out all of the Account Info in full. Be sure to put good KEYWORDS (for your biz) in the bio.

Step 2) Make sure you upload a nice engaging picture of yourself and a decent looking background that matches your business (Picture & Design under “Settings”)

Step 3) There’s a free service called TweetLater - go sign up for the free service level. Set up an automatic WELCOME MESSAGE that will be sent to each of your new followers. This welcome message should have a link back to your business giving away something of value. (Could be a name-squeeze page — or *not* — doesn’t matter. Give value.)

Now you’re thinking “new followers … WHAT NEW FOLLOWERS”.

Step 4) Okay, here’s where it gets good. Go to “FIND PEOPLE” and put in some keywords that relate to your business. Find some people with a good sized follower list to follow. Some of those people will follow you back … maybe 10% of them.

Step 5) GET IN THE CONVERSATION - now that you’re following people in your target market - *interact with them*. Mouse-over the message and click the little reply button for starters. Retweet things you like (Just cut and paste and put RT in front of it). Go to http://search.twitter.com and look for keywords related to your business & get in the conversation some more.

Step 6) Kick it up a notch. Okay, remember those people you’re following - targeted for your niche? Go to THEIR FOLLOWERS LIST and follow the active people (hint, no profile pic? don’t follow). 15-30% of those people will FOLLOW YOU BACK. Feel free to follow as many people as you want up to Twitter’s daily limit (currently 1000 a day) - you can have an employee do it - just be sure to UNFOLLOW once a week as well because Twitter likes your follower-to-following ratio to be pretty close.

Step 6b) Same as “6″, but follow people you find talking about your keywords in http://search.twitter.com (plus reply to anyone you feel like from there as well)

Step 7) STAY IN THE CONVERSATION - keep doing what I said to do in Step 5. Keep being a part of twitter conversations, opportunities will arrive to suggest products or services from within your business. It’s always good to add value, too - Twitter People (tweeps) *love* videos, webinars, teleseminars, etc. Move them from Twitter to something of value (for free) and then into your marketing funnel somehow from there. Look around at what others in your niche are doing, too. Most importantly, you have to be a part of twitter to benefit from it.

Do this for a couple weeks and you should get more than a taste of how powerful Twitter can be for your business.

If you liked my advice, be sure to follow me on Twitter as well. I give a free video tutorial for people starting out.

Yes, “Good Bye Harris”

Hmm, this has been interesting so far…

I sent an email yesterday with
“Good Bye Harris?” as the subject
line and a bunch of my buddies have
come out of the wood-work and instant
messaged me asking me what the heck
is going on…

Yes, as I said this is something that
sounds very much like “Good Bye Harris”
and I’ll explain everything to everyone very
soon (hopefully tomorrow).
My talented video editor, Timmy, is
working on finishing touches of a video
that I prepared on Friday before going
to Vegas - so, like I said, it should be
ready hopefully tomorrow.

In the meantime, please comment by
clicking “comment” just to the top-left
of this blog post with your guesses of wth
I’m talking about - one hint: No, I’m not RETIRING.

I actually enjoy this stuff way too much
to even think about stopping.

Comment right now. The official video
announcement should come tomorrow as
soon as it’s ready.

Keep Having Fun,
Harris Fellman, CCM
